Buttonwillow Trackday
Zero degree sleeping bags are a good thing. Not having one in 40 degree weather isn’t much fun. Nevertheless, it was pretty nice to sleep in the car and wake up as the track gates were opened. No more roach motels for me, thank you.
The weather was a balmy 74 degrees in the afternoon, with a very light breeze. Kevin tried out his newly assembled GSXR front end, and I just tried to smooth out my lines a bit and carry more speed. We did one session with Chuck Sorensen, AMA 250 GP national champ. Man, lots to learn. There are a bunch of places to go faster on that track.
One of the less thrilling moments came after a stupid paddock mistake. I apparently left my gas cap unlocked after a fillup, and got a nice big splash of gas in the chest at the top of the rise after turn 2. I opted to continue the lap, slowly with my hand up, getting back into the pits to clean myself and the bike. It’s not much fun when carelessness increases risks unnecessarily.
One of the instructors showed up with a laptimer beacon, so I was finally able to get a sense for my pace. My best laps were just a bit under 2:04. I’d like to get closer to 2 flat next weekend, when I’ll be spending 2 consecutive days at Buttonwillow with Keigwins. Should be fun.
